Byxa (Ears) – Eurorack Envelope Follower & Contact Mic

Byxa [v u h a] ("Ears" in Ukrainian) ─ is an improved version of the renowned "Ears" module by Tom Whitwell and Emilie Gillet. First and foremost, this module is an indispensable tool for extracting CV signals from any audio source. Specifically, it splits the incoming audio into a gate and an envelope, which are instantly available as modulation sources.

How It Works

Essentially, the module’s functionality depends on whether an external signal is connected:

• External Input: When a cable is plugged into the "In" socket, the module processes that specific audio.

• Built-in Piezo: If the input is empty, the piezoelectric sensor under the fingerprint pattern becomes the primary source. Consequently, you can generate unique envelopes and triggers simply by tapping or scratching the textured surface.

• Audio Output: The "Out" socket provides a duplicated signal from the input or the raw, organic sound of the contact microphone.

Key Improvements: Front Panel Control

In contrast to the original design, where settings were hidden on the back of the board, Byxa features tactile switches directly on the front panel. This means you can now adjust your parameters on the fly during a performance:

1. Gate Threshold: Use the top-left switch to set the triggering sensitivity (1V, 2V, or 4V).

2. Attack Time: The top-right switch allows you to toggle between Slow, Mid, and Fast attack settings.

3. Decay Time: The bottom switch controls the release of the envelope (Slow/Mid/Fast).

Moreover, these hardware upgrades make the module significantly more playable and versatile in a live modular setup.
